Beginner Throwing Class


Students in this Beginner Throwing Class will learn the basics of throwing on the wheel. They will learn a brief history of clay, vocabulary of clay stages, functions of potter’s tools, wheel set ups, throwing techniques, how to prep or trimming, how to trim, and will result in a final class critique of greenware.

Week 1: INTRO - Get a feel for the clay, what we will cover in the class over six weeks. Intro to clay, history of clay, feel out the wheel, explanation of wheel functions, try throwing. Clean up.

Week 2: THROWING - Demo of throwing cylinders, why we start with cylinders (can expand on these for any shape), throw, work on technique. Clean up.

Week 3: THROWING - Demo throwing cylinders and expanding on various shapes depending on skill. Help students with technique. Students should now have a few pieces for trimming class the following week. Teach how to wrap pieces and save for next week. Clean up

Week 4: TRIMMING - Demo of trimming, help students set  up for trimming, trim what they have, throw if they have time. Clean up

Week 5: TRIMMING/THROWING - Time for either trimming or throwing. Assist students with any questions on techniques. Clean Up

Week 6: TRIMMING & CRITIQUE - Finish trimming, clean up wheels, critique of greenware, schedule a time for them to come back and glaze (perhaps on a Wednesday Casual Night).

Registration Cost - $150

Appropriate for anyone who wants to learn the basic of wheel throwing.

Age restriction on Tuesday night class (14 years and up)


Registration includes 6 weeks of classes (one per week), 25 lbs of new clay, bisque firings, and unlimited open studio time.
